How to Get Coffee, Wine, and Food Stains Out of Carpet
Spills happen. The good news: most fresh stains come out if you act quickly and use the right approach. Here’s how to handle the most common culprits — and the one mistake that sets stains permanently.
The golden rule: blot, don’t rub
Always blot a stain with a clean, dry cloth — pressing firmly to lift the liquid. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibers and spreads it wider. Work from the outside of the stain toward the center.
Coffee
- Blot up as much as possible immediately.
- Mix one tablespoon of dish soap and one tablespoon of white vinegar into two cups of warm water.
- Apply with a cloth, blotting gently.
- Rinse with cool water and blot dry.
Old coffee stains leave a yellowish-brown tint that often needs professional extraction.
Red wine
- Blot immediately — don’t let it sit.
- Cover the stain with a little cool water to dilute it, then blot.
- A paste of baking soda and water can help draw it out as it dries; vacuum once dry.
- Repeat as needed.
Avoid white wine or salt “hacks” on the carpet pad — they can drive the stain deeper.
Food and grease
- For solids, scrape gently first.
- For greasy foods, a small amount of dish soap solution helps break down the oil.
- Blot, rinse, and dry.
The mistake that sets stains forever
Heat sets stains. Don’t use a household steam iron, very hot water, or a hair dryer on a fresh stain — heat can bond the stain to the fiber permanently. (Professional hot-water extraction is different: it’s controlled and immediately extracted back out.)
When to call a professional
Call a pro if:
- The stain is large, old, or has already been “set”
- It keeps reappearing after drying (a sign it wicked into the pad)
- It’s on a wool or delicate fiber you don’t want to risk
